Nicotine Pouches: What They Are and How They Work

Nicotine Pouches: What They Are and How They Work

23rd Oct 2026

What are nicotine pouches? They are small, tobacco-free pouches of nicotine powder that sit between the gum and the lip and release nicotine and flavour slowly, with no smoke, no vapour and no device. This guide covers how they work, how to use one, what users report, how pouches differ from vaping and where UK law stands. For help choosing a strength, flavour or brand, see our beginners guide to nicotine pouches, browse the nicotine pouches range, or read more in our nicotine pouch guides. Pouches are for adults only, and this is general information, not medical advice.

What Are Nicotine Pouches?

GOV.UK describes nicotine pouches as "tobacco-free pouches containing nicotine powder that are placed between the gum and lip". ASH Scotland adds that the contents are a fibrous white powder containing nicotine, sweeteners and flavourings. The pouch is not swallowed or chewed, and it is thrown away after use.

Pouches come in different sizes. Go Smoke Free's range includes mini, slim and regular formats: mini pouches are smaller and more discreet, and regular pouches are larger and more visible. Flavours and strengths vary by brand, and brands such as Killa sell a wide flavour range.

ASH Scotland also warns about products sold as "nicotine-free" or "NoNIC". It says some contain nicotine analogues such as 6-methyl-nicotine or nicotinamide, which it states may be more addictive and more toxic than nicotine, and whose regulatory status is unclear. Check the ingredients list before buying anything with a nicotine-free label.

Nicotine Pouches vs Snus

Pouches are often confused with snus, but they are different products. ASH notes that snus is a tobacco product that has been banned in the UK since 1992, while nicotine pouches contain no tobacco.

How Do Nicotine Pouches Work?

Once the pouch is in place under the lip, it releases nicotine and flavour, and the nicotine is absorbed from the mouth into the bloodstream. ASH Scotland reports that blood nicotine levels peak about 20 to 65 minutes after use and that the speed of absorption is linked to the strength of the pouch.

It also cites a 2024 study estimating that up to half the nicotine in a pouch is absorbed, compared with roughly 10 to 15 percent of the nicotine in a cigarette. A systematic review and meta-analysis found that pouches of 8mg or more can deliver more nicotine than a cigarette. There is nothing to light, charge or refill. The pouch is the whole product, which is the practical difference from a vape.

How to Use Nicotine Pouches

The steps are the same across most brands:

  1. Choose a strength. Pick one that suits your usual nicotine intake (more on strength below).
  2. Open the can. Take out one pouch only.
  3. Place it. Put the pouch between your upper lip and gum and adjust it until it feels comfortable.
  4. Leave it in. Expect a slight tingle as the nicotine and flavour release. Do not chew it or swallow it.
  5. Remove and dispose. Take the pouch out when you are finished and put it in the bin.

If a pouch is swallowed and you feel unwell, get medical advice. For what happens to pouches and cans after use, see our guide to the environmental impact of nicotine pouches. Store the can somewhere cool and dry.

Guidance on how long to leave a pouch in varies. Go Smoke Free's own guidance is a maximum of 30 minutes, while some brand guides suggest up to an hour, so follow the instructions printed on the can for your brand. Take regular breaks between pouches.

If you are coming from cigarettes or vaping, you already have a baseline nicotine intake, and the beginners guide covers matching a pouch strength to it. If you have never used nicotine, start at the lower end of the range.

How Much Nicotine Is in a Pouch?

Nicotine levels in pouches are not regulated, according to ASH Scotland, so strength differs widely between products. It reports that a typical product contains 5 to 20mg per pouch and that some products sold online exceed 100mg. Go Smoke Free's range runs from 1.5mg to 20mg per pouch. ASH Scotland gives these figures:

Product

Typical nicotine content

Nicotine pouch

5 to 20mg per pouch

Cigarette

About 12mg

Nicotine gum or lozenge

2 to 4mg

Nicotine patch

7 to 21mg

These figures describe the amount in the product, not the amount absorbed, so they cannot be compared one for one. Always check the strength printed on the can.

Nicotine Pouches Side Effects

Research on pouches is limited, and ASH notes that most studies are industry-funded. The effects below are those named by ASH, ASH Scotland and a German risk assessment, and the list is not complete.

  • Early effects: ASH says anecdotal reports include nausea, vomiting, headaches and dizziness, especially in people not used to nicotine. Stop using pouches if these occur and seek medical advice if they continue.
  • Gums and mouth: ASH Scotland reports two studies that found signs of chronic inflammation and other negative changes in the gum tissue of users. ASH adds that, based on evidence for nicotine gum and lozenges, experts speculate that long-term use could cause mouth soreness, ulcers or gum recession.
  • Heart and circulation: a German federal risk assessment, cited by ASH Scotland, identified high nicotine levels as the main risk, with strong effects on the cardiovascular system.
  • Higher-risk groups: the same assessment names children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and people with cardiovascular disease as facing high risks.
  • Dependence: ASH Scotland describes nicotine as a health-harming substance that can be very addictive.

A Cochrane review published in October 2025 describes little to very low confidence in the evidence, because the studies were small and few in number. It found no serious short-term harms in the few small studies it covered, all of which were in people who smoke. If you have a heart condition or any health concern, speak to a GP before using pouches.

Nicotine Pouches vs Vaping

Pouches and vapes both deliver nicotine without burning tobacco, and they differ mainly in format and in the rules that apply to them.

Because the units differ, a 10mg pouch and a 10mg/ml e-liquid are not comparable. For how nicotine from each route behaves in the body, see our guide to smoking, vaping and nicotine absorption. Both deliver nicotine, which ASH Scotland describes as a health-harming and very addictive substance.

Are Nicotine Pouches Legal in the UK?

Nicotine pouches are legal to buy in the UK, and the rules are changing. The table separates what is confirmed from what is still to be decided.

To be decided

ASH states that pouches are not currently covered by tobacco or vape regulation, have no nicotine limit and can legally be sold to children until the age-of-sale rule starts. The GOV.UK guidance says retailers, including online retailers, must be satisfied that a customer is 18 or over before selling, and that selling to someone under 18 is an offence. It adds that from the same date, selling nicotine products at a substantial discount is also an offence where the purpose or effect is promotion.

Some European countries have banned pouches. ASH Scotland notes that Belgium did so in 2023 and the Netherlands and France in 2025, and that Germany restricts them as an unauthorised novel food ingredient.

FAQs

How long do nicotine pouches last?

Nicotine from a pouch reaches its peak in the blood about 20 to 65 minutes after use, according to ASH Scotland. How long to keep the pouch in your mouth depends on the brand: Go Smoke Free's guidance is a maximum of 30 minutes, while some brand guides suggest up to an hour. Follow the instructions on the can.

Are nicotine pouches safe?

ASH Scotland states that nicotine is a health-harming substance that can be very addictive, and that research on the health effects of pouches is limited. ASH says using pouches is likely to be less harmful than smoking tobacco, but that more independent research is needed. The Cochrane review describes little to very low confidence in the evidence, though it found no serious short-term harms in the few small studies it covered. The German risk assessment named pouches as a high risk for children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and people with cardiovascular disease. If you are unsure, talk to your GP or pharmacist.

Do nicotine pouches contain tobacco?

No. GOV.UK describes them as tobacco-free, and ASH states that pouches do not contain tobacco. They do contain nicotine (GOV.UK's guidance covers synthetic nicotine as well), along with fillers, sweeteners and flavourings.

Can nicotine pouches help you quit smoking?

ASH Scotland states that pouches are not medically licensed stop-smoking products. The Cochrane review states that the evidence on their use for stopping smoking is uncertain, and ASH notes that NICE does not currently recommend them for quitting. If you want to stop smoking, your GP or local stop smoking service can advise on options that have been approved for it.

Which nicotine pouch strength should I choose?

Start from your usual nicotine intake. If you smoke or vape regularly, you already have a baseline, and our beginners guide covers matching a pouch strength to it. If you have never used nicotine, start at the lower end of the range, which begins at 1.5mg per pouch at Go Smoke Free. Strength is printed on the can in milligrams per pouch, so check it every time: ASH Scotland reports that levels are not regulated and that some products sold online exceed 100mg, while Go Smoke Free's range tops out at 20mg per pouch.

What age do you need to be to buy nicotine pouches?

You need to be 18. From 29 October 2026 it will be an offence for retailers, including online retailers, to sell any vaping or nicotine product, including nicotine pouches, to anyone under 18, according to GOV.UK. Until then, ASH says there is no legal age of sale for pouches, which is why they can currently be sold to children. Go Smoke Free's pouches are for adults only.

Which nicotine pouch brands does Go Smoke Free sell?

The range includes Velo, Zyn, Kingston, Killa and Lost Mary Airplane Mode. Flavours and strengths differ by brand, so check the strength printed on the can before you choose.
