What is Throat Hit?
'Throat hit' is that feeling you get when you inhale on an e-cig. The vapour hits, causing a pleasurable tingle or sensation. This is caused by ingredients in your e-liquid, hitting the back of your throat. If you're an experienced vaper or new to vaping, you've more than likely heard about the perfect "throat hit." Some vapers prefer no throat hit, but this sensation is an essential part of many vaping experiences. There are two kinds of throat hits: strong and smooth. Different e-liquids, e-cigs and setups determine the type of throat hit you're looking for. More on this below:
Strong Throat Hit:
1. You're going to need an e-liquid with a higher PG (propylene glycol) ratio of 70%. 2. Adjust the power settings or increase the temperature on your e-cig. If you have airflow control, try reducing it as this can give you more of the kick you're wanting. 3. Nicotine is probably the number one thing that affects your throat hit. The more of a throat hit you want, the more nicotine your e-liquid should have. 4. The flavour of your e-liquid: Mint or menthol flavoured e-liquid give a better kick. People who want to quit tobacco products generally find that a strong hit helps with the quitting process as a strong throat kick from the vape is similar to the one caused by traditional smoking.
Smooth Throat Hit:
1. For a smoother hit, your VG (vegetable glycerin) needs to have a higher ratio. This will also mean thicker and denser clouds known as Sub Ohm vaping. 2. Reducing the nicotine percentage will also go a long way towards a silkier hit. 3. Don't use sharper flavours and instead go for more of the sweeter, fruity types, like Strawberry Milkshake or a Mixed Berry e-liquid.
Five steps to get the perfect throat hit:
Experiment with contrasting Flavours
The flavour of your e-juice will most definitely affect your throat hit, although in a lesser way to other adjustments you can make. Chocolate or coffee will give you a smoother, sweeter hit. A triple menthol or tobacco is an excellent choice for a stronger throat hit
Adjust Your Power Setting
If your e-cigarette or kit has an adjustable power setting, then you can control your throat hit easily. The higher the power, the greater the throat hit, the lower the power, the smoother the the throat hit. If you have a stock standard e-cigarette, it won't be possible, so it's worth investing in a more high end and adjustable model.
Check Your E-Liquid PG/VG Ratio
E-liquids are mainly made of four fundamental ingredients: Flavouring, nicotine, Vegetable Glycerine (VG) and Propylene Glycol (PG). There are varying ratios of these ingredients in the various e-liquids. The right percentage will give you the best throat hit. E-liquids for a strong throat hit will have more PG than VG, whilst those who prefer a smoother vape should choose a mix of more VG.
Adjust the Strength of Your Nicotine
This is the first and obvious element that affects throat hit. The more throat hit you want, the more nicotine you need in your e-liquid. Suppose you're trying to reduce nicotine intake. The good news is that increasing it isn't the only factor that can affect your throat hit, so try our other suggestions.
Adjust the Airflow Settings on Your E-Cig
Not all e-cigs will have this option available, but if you can adjust the airflow settings, for a more potent hit open the airflow setting and for something smoother, adjust your airflow setting to a tighter position.
